Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle Gift Set

Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle champagne Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle Gift SetHere’s a rather elegant and understated alternative to some of the more ostentatious champagne accessories and gift sets we’ve reported on in the past.

The Grand Siècle Coffret is designed to showcase Laurent-Perrier’s delectable multi-vintage prestige cuvee, Grand Siècle. The cleverly-constructed black case contains a magnum of the good stuff and six hand-blown Baccarat crystal champagne flutes in separate compartments.

This isn’t something for lovers of bling, as there are no diamonds or precious shiny metals But, those who know pure class will enjoy everything about the case, magnum, spirit and flute. The Coffret costs $3,100

Laurent-Perrier, founded in 1812 and located in Tours-sur-Marne, France, is the world’s largest family-owned champagne house.

Grand Siècle is a blend of pinot noir and chardonnay, with the latter being slightly dominant. The grapes are supplied by twelve of the most prestigious crus or villages, all of them Grands Crus classified at 100%, such as Ambonnay, Verzenay, Mailly, Avize, Cramant, Chouilly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Within the vineyards of these crus, only the very best plots are selected, as are the finest musts from the pressings. The blended wine is then aged for about 5 years.

According to Russian newspaper Komersant, the 1907 vintage bubbly had been sent to the Russian Royal Family in 1916 from the Heidsieck vineyard but the ship carrying them sank off the Finnish coast.

The wreck was only discovered in 1997 when divers found the undamaged bottles which were later bought by the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Moscow, which charges over $20,000 per night for a room.

A priceless bottle of 115-year-old champagne

priceless champagne veuve A priceless bottle of 115 year old champagneA bottle of 115-year-old champagne has been found in a sideboard at a Scottish castle, BBC reported.

Chris James, the owner of Torosay Castle and Gardens, found the bottle of the distinctly yellow-labelled 1893 Veuve Cliquot champagne in a solid wooden dining room side board, which is a family heirloom. The “secret” compartment did not have a key, so Mr James employed a locksmith in an attempt to bring a family mystery to a conclusion.

priceless champagne veuve 2 A priceless bottle of 115 year old champagneOn opening the door, he found a bottle of brandy, a port decanter and a bottle of claret and the single bottle of Veuve Cliquot champagne. The drinks are believed to have been locked up since at least 1897.

The bottle, complete with label, was in mint condition having been kept in the dark throughout.

James contacted Veuve Cliquot in France to enquire whether the bottle was of interest. Veuve Cliquot had no idea when they first used their trademark yellow labels, but the bottle found at the castle was the oldest by a long margin.

A priceless bottle of 115 year old champagneThe priceless bottle is now on display the Veuve Cliquot visitor centre at Reims in France.
Fabienne Huttaux, head of communications there, said: “The bottle is literally priceless. It is a one-off and therefore unique. We would never consider selling it as it is far too important to us.”

Asked whether the champagne was still drinkable (It probably tastes horrible ^_^), Peter McKay which handles public relations for Torosay castle, said: “I don’t think that question will ever be answered. It is so valuable to Veuve Clicquot in France that they are going to keep it exactly as it is.”

Though, if I were Mr James I would ask for unlimited free champagne !
