Which airlines will loan you an iPad?

Iceland Express has become the latest carrier to offer passengers iPads, joining a small but rapidly growing club turning to Apple for their inflight entertainment.

The budget airline, which flies from Reykjavik to destinations including London, New York, Berlin and Copenhagen, will introduce the devices first on transatlantic flights, before rolling it out to the rest of the fleet over the next few months.

Passengers will have to pay $13 to use the devices, which can be used to watch movies and television shows, listen to music, read magazines and play games.

airBaltic First in Europe to Introduce Apple iPads

Air Baltic is to become the first European airline to provide iPads for passenger use, the airline confirmed over the weekend.

Passengers will be able to watch movies, cartoons, music and games or read newspapers on the devices on board select flights with Latvia’s flag-carrier.

The scheme will be rolled out over the coming season, said Air Baltic, although no prices have been announced and a spokesperson was not available to comment on the likely cost or availability of the units.

BlackBerry PlayBook

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion just announced its iPad rival at its developers conference in San Francisco.

The PlayBook is aimed at business customers, co-chief executive Michael Lazaridis said during a speech at the conference.

The device is 9.7 millimetres thick and features a seven-inch touch screen. That’s smaller than the iPad’s 9.7-inch display.

It can run both HTML 5 and Flash 10.1 and has a one gigahertz dual-core processor with one gigabyte of RAM.

Sofitel launches its iPad application “The Kiosk”

French hotel chain Sofitel launched an iPad newspaper service for guests July 26, in a move that could mean a fresh start for the dwindling tradition of the morning newspaper in hotels.

The luxury chain has launched “The Kiosk,” a customer-only iPad app which offers a selection of interactive daily magazines and newspapers and will be provided to guests on an iPad for the duration of their stay.

Guests can choose from publications such as Le Monde in France, the Independent and Vogue in the UK, Bild or Die Welt in Germany or La Repubblica in Italy.

Tod’s iPad Cases

Italian luxury goods firm Tod’s is offering world’s most expensive iPad case, according to Luxist.

They are releasing four different versions of the case, one in supple calf skin and three more in exotic croc.

The luxurious case, finished in genuine alligator, is priced at $4,900 and the version in buff colored calfskin is priced at $495.

The luxury iPad case is handmade in Italy and will be available in brown, blue and tan from Tod’s boutiques worldwide beginning in November.

Lonely Planet’s iPad Guides Released

Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel publisher, has ported its full color Discover series to the iPad, it announced August 3.

The books are now available on the Apple iBookstore, with Lonely Planet saying that the series “takes the ebook to a new level.”

Using the iPad’s touch-screen functionality, users can navigate between reviews and points of interest on a map, bookmarking key sights and taking notes using the iBooks application.
