Christie’s on Wednesday sold an extremely rare, 17th century fancy deep grayish-blue diamond for $24.3 million, a world record price for any diamond or jewelry sold at auction in London.

The 35.56-ct. Wittelsbach diamond was once owned by King Philip IV of Spain, who purchased for his daughter, Margarita Teresa, for her engagement to Leopold I of Austria in 1664. It was mined in India and owned by the same private collector since 1964.

The price for Wittelsbach topped the previous record of $16.5 million for a 100ct diamond in 1995 in Geneva.

De Beers Valley Of Diamonds

With its latest collection, De Beers taps into the myth of a diamond-studded valley ringed by flames.
Enter the Valley of Diamonds collection, a 13-piece lineup of rings, necklaces and a single pair of earrings inspired by an ancient myth of the same name.

The origins of the tale vary—the Chinese, Indians and Persians all had their versions, some dating as far back as the eighth century—but the premise is invariably the same: an impossible-to-reach valley richly covered in diamonds.

And the obstacles for the protagonists are always plentiful. As if menacing surrounding mountains aren’t enough, the area is also ringed with walls of fire and inhabited by dangerous snakes whose gaze can strike a man dead, natch.

Louisiana Woman Finds 2-Carat Diamond

Rhonda Bankston reportedly says she found out about the park’s surface diamond prospecting on a show about finding cash and treasure. She was into her second day of prospecting by surface searching over a newly plowed field with friends when she spotted the gem.

The park is located on the eroded surface of the world’s eighth largest diamond-bearing deposit and visitors pay a fee to surface search there.
