Geneva Days 2019: TAG Heuer – Once a Disruptor, Always a Disruptor

TAG Heuer introduces a state-of-the-art carbon hairspring in its latest interpretation of the Carrera

Jan 15, 2019 | By Lynette Kee

Not too long ago, Switzerland’s biggest watch conglomerate the Swatch Group announced Nivachron, its revolutionary non-magnetic alloy hairspring. While it would seem that the watch industry may take some time to respond to the new material, TAG Heuer showed that it had an answer for Nivachron ready and waiting.

The Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon Nanograph

TAG Heuer‘s latest instalment of innovative and disruptive timepieces is the new Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon Nanograph, a watch that stays true to the brand’s historic roots of innovation yet made for the future. Always an innovator in watchmaking craftsmanship, the new model features a newly reinvented carbon-composite hairspring that replaces alloy and silicon versions at the heart of its mechanical movement.

For any mechanical watch, the hairspring is key to overall precision. Carbon-composites offer a lightweight, low-density alternative to other fragile metal and silicon versions that is also resistant to gravity and shock. This in-house technology represents yet another milestone in the new generation of hairsprings that shake up traditional watchmaking.

Being the first to regulate this carbon-composite hairspring, Stéphane Bianchi, CEO of the LVMH Watchmaking Division and CEO of TAG Heuer, expressed that the latest Carrera 02T edition “underscores our legacy in achieving watchmaking excellence and proves that we remain true to our values of performance, disruption and avant-garde.”

To top off the incredible technological creation, the Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon Nanograph is completed with a nanoscopic (a million times smaller than a millimetre) hexagonal pattern on both the dial and the movement that is visible through the open worked dial and sapphire case back. Bright streaks of neon green can also be seen the aluminium bridge and the inscription on the tourbillon movement to give the timepiece an original TAG Heuer finesse.

To the brand, this watch, like its predecessors, marries TAG Heuer’s capabilities in both engineering and in the development of compelling movements, with its visual aesthetics of modern, high-tech and elegant proportions, the hallmarks of the Carrera collection for over 50 years.
