For Baselworld 2018 Rolex is introducing a “love it or hate it” rainbow gem-set version of the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. Among watch aficionados, the Ref. 116595BROW is referred to as the Rolex Rainbow Daytona. It was first introduced in white and yellow gold in 2012. The new Rolex Rainbow Daytona is now offered in Everose gold – the brand’s uniquely patented formulation of gold – matched by a scintillating array of with multi-coloured baguette-cut gemstones in place of regular Daytona hour markers.

Pink gold is the result of an alloy of gold with amounts of red copper added to give the precious metal a unique rose gold hue. However, prolonged exposure to environmental factors including saltwater and chlorine eventually cause the warm, rose gold tint to lose its lustre. In 2005, Rolex introduced Everose, their proprietary blend of 18-karat pink gold that combines pure gold, copper, and a small amount of platinum to create a unique rose gold alloy that will never lose its warm red hues thanks to platinum content which locks in the copper’s natural pink tint, allowing the metal to retain its original colour even with exposure to the elements.

Rolex’s Everose alloy first made an appearance on their Daytona line of watches. The Rolex Daytona rose gold came as a fresh take on the premium version of Rolex’s sport chronograph. Rolex had been manufacturing chronographs in solid gold for decades. However, yellow gold was used on the vast majority of these watches. The introduction of Everose offered buyers a contemporary twist on an iconic and classic design and the new Baselworld 2018 Rolex Rainbow Daytona Everose takes its creative opulence a little further.

This latest 18 ct Everose gold Rainbow Daytona features a case adorned with 56 brilliant-cut diamonds set into the lugs and crown guard, and the dial features 11 baguette-cut sapphire hour markers, each of which matches the colour of the corresponding point on the bezel. The chronograph counters made from pink Gold Crystals, match the Everose 18ct gold case with a special shimmering effect, created during the crystallization of a pink gold alloy by means of a special process developed by Rolex.

That said, the original Rainbow Rolex Daytonas in white or yellow gold offered a better base of contrast for the coloured sapphires. On the new Everose gold Baselworld 2018 Rolex Rainbow Daytona, the colours are not as vivid but are otherwise very naturally matched in striking opulence in terms of overall aesthetics and presentation. Even then, this latest Rainbow Daytona is not a watch for everyone. Rock with caution.

Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona

Goes without saying that the Baselworld 2018 Rolex Rainbow Daytona Everose Ref. 116595 is powered by the venerable calibre 4130, a robust column wheel chronograph movement with vertical clutch, providing an instant and precise start and stop. The oscillator of the 2018 Rolex Rainbow Daytona also utilises a blue Parachrom, exclusive paramagnetic alloy, hairspring insensitive to magnetic fields while offering great stability in the face of temperature variations thus able to remain up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. As always, the latest Rainbow Daytona is a Rolex Superlative Chronometer guaranteeing rate accuracy of −2 /+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer
