Sea Containers House London

Contemporary hotel chain Mondrian is to open its first property in Europe in London, the company has confirmed.

The luxury Mondrian London is to be located inside the iconic Sea Containers house, a huge building located on the South Bank of the River Thames.

Morgan’s Hotel Group will open the 360-room Mondrian London in early 2014, pumping approximately $15 million into the conversion.

The hotel will have an ‘innovative’ restaurant as well as a ground floor bar and rooftop bar, which is likely to compete with the OXO Tower Bar, run by Harvey Nichols, for the affection of tourists and locals keen to see the sun set over the Thames.

Sea Containers House was originally conceived as a luxury hotel but it opened as an office space. It is now being refurbished with new restaurants and cafes alongside the well-trodden Thames Path.

Millions of tourists walk the route between Waterloo and London Bridge, which takes in the London Eye, Royal Festival Hall, National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, OXO Tower and the Tate Modern, every year.

The Mondrian will be the sixth Mondrian hotel, with three currently open in the US and new properties expected to open soon in Doha, Qatar and in Nassau, The Bahamas.
