The Andaz Shanghai’s 307 rooms opened to the public for the first time October 18, marking the first entry of the Andaz brand into Asia.
With rooms that offer views of the historical Xintiandi district, the hotel is decorated with mixed media artwork designed to evoke the old and new sides of the area, using items such as LED lighting, sensors, video projections and recycled materials.
The eclectic theme continues into the rooms, which boast changeable mood lighting and high-tech glowing sinks and baths juxtaposed against rock face walls.
Refreshment is provided by three restaurant-bars, including the Andaz lounger, the Éclair patisserie and the four-level Shanghainese restaurant Hai Pai.
A planned spa drawing on both traditional Chinese medicine and modern wellness techniques, and a ‘Garden Studio’ will round out the hotel.
Andaz already offers properties in London, NYC, San Diego and West Hollywood, although its fifth location is likely to be one of the toughest markets it’s entered yet.
Shanghai’s luxury hotel scene is booming, with the huge development of recent years creating a glut of properties from names such as InterContinental and the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong.
Opened last year, it was recently named the best hotel in the world by readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
