2012 Fisker Karma

Eco-friendly automaker Fisker has launched sales of its Karma sedan, after receiving certification from US authorities.

The Karma Sedan, a plug-in hybrid vehicle powered by both a battery and gasoline engine, is now on sale through its US dealer network.

The model was given a 32-mile (51km) all-electric range by the US Environmental Protection Agency, three miles (five kilometers) under that of the Chevrolet Volt, a similar range-extended vehicle which sells for $39,145.

After that distance, the Karma‘s 2.0-liter gasoline engine kicks in to power a generator, offering a fuel economy of 52 mpg (4.52 l/100km).

The model costs from $95,900 in the US and from €85,500 in Europe, where it is already available — last week, the first model sold in the UK was snapped up by an auction buyer for £140,000 (€159,770 euros), more than double its market value.

It boasts a top speed of 201 km/h and a 0-60 (0-97km/h) time of 5.9 seconds operating in its high-performance ‘Sport Mode’, which uses the combined power of the battery and gasoline engine.
