Chevrolet has released details of the 45th anniversary edition of its Camaro sports car, set to be unveiled at a Camaro fan event April 15.

The enhancements for the Camaro, the most popular sports car in the US, cover both performance and design and coincide with the birthday celebrations for the vehicle, first launched in 1966.

The 2012 Camaro will feature an improved version of the current model’s 3.6 liter V-6 engine, which adds an increase of 11 hp (8kW) to bring the total to 323 hp (241 kW).

Chevrolet has also revamped the vehicle’s suspension, adding a new FE4 system designed to give flatter cornering and better handling ability all around thanks to returned front and rear dampers and new front and rear stabilizer bars.

The 2012 Camaro will also boast a rear spoiler as standard, along with upgraded taillamps (previously an option) and a revised interior.

Customers buying the 45th Anniversary Special Edition model will get a signature stripe in red and silver on the hood and deck, new-design wheels and an upgraded interior finished in black and white and featuring the vehicle’s anniversary logo.

The car will be unveiled at the Camaro5 Fest II in Arizona, a meeting of American Camaro enthusiasts that organizers believe could be the largest gathering ever.

The Camaro is one of America’s most iconic sports cars, with legions of fans permanently in competition with fans of its major rival, the Ford Mustang.

Despite an excellent sales performance from Ford last month, where it sold more vehicles than Chevrolet’s owner General Motors for the first time in over a year, the Camaro managed to best its rival, continuing a recent winning streak that’s seen it outsell the Mustang by over 4000 since the start of the year.
