Seoul’s Incheon Airport has set a world record in duty free sales during the first half of this year, reports have suggested.

Passengers at the airport spent a whopping $727 million at the airport in the first six months of this year, a world record according to The Moodie Report.

The figure outstrips spending at Dubai Duty Free, the world’s most popular duty free outlets for the past three years, which managed $698 million in sales.

Last year, the three largest airports in the world for duty free spending were Dubai, Incheon and London Heathrow.

Incheon’s rise reflects the spending increase by Chinese passengers, for whom Korea has become a popular holiday destination and the airport provides a wide selection of luxury shops.

Skincare products are hugely popular at the airport, accounting for some 27 percent of everything sold last year thanks to demand from Chinese and Japanese travelers.

However, in the coming weeks, travelers at the airport are set to be able to spend even more, thanks to the opening of a new Louis Vuitton store, a significant addition from one of the world’s most popular luxury brands.

The store will be the first duty-free Louis Vuitton outlet in the world and is a major coup for Incheon, which reportedly went to extraordinary lengths to secure the store, now described as the “first and last” of its kind in the world.
