Though the top-ranked US shopping destination in a Condé Nast Traveler poll may come as no surprise, voters also gave props to a few smaller American cities which were described as retail havens for everyone from bookworms to art aficionados and fans of vintage finds.

80,000 readers named New York City America’s ultimate shopping mecca, for offering shopaholics everything from glitzy designer names and department stores to “quirky hipster boutiques” in Williamsburg and homegrown local creations at the Brooklyn Flea Market.

California emerged as the leading retail state among readers, with three cities cracking the top 10 list: Los Angeles, San Francisco and Newport Beach.

And though the usual suspects feature — LA and Las Vegas, for example — the list includes, perhaps, less predictable choices like Charleston, SC, which was also voted readers’ favorite city this year.

Readers recommend strolling down King Street where independent bookshops, consignment shops and art galleries pave the streets in addition to favorite retailers. Newport Beach also cracked the top 10 list for the plethora of “mom ‘n pop” stores, described as second to none for the area.

Here are the Top 10 shopping cities in the US, according to CN Traveler readers:
