Spanish hotel chain Sol Melia is to open its first hotel in the US October 15, the firm announced September 7.

The brand, which has a strong presence in Spain and South America, as well as hotels in several other countries, says that the opening of the Sol Melia Atlanta is a “landmark” for the company.

It will invest $35 million in the Melia Atlanta, formerly known as the Renaissance Atlanta Hotel Downtown, to adapt it to the standard of its other Melia hotels.

New features are set to include a fourth floor pool deck with views of the city and a fitness center.

The refurbishment will mean that the hotel is likely to offer upper four- or five-star comfort, unique signature dining options and most likely a private “The Level” floor for superior guests.

Sol Melia’s expansion into the US puts it on equal footing with fellow Spanish chain NH Hotels, which operates the Jolly Madison Square hotel in New York…

Although both chains have expanded from Spain to build a significant presence in South and Central America.
