ART REPUBLIK Issue 5: Singapore Art Capital

Singapore’s premier quarterly art magazine celebrates hometown glory in its one-year anniversary issue

Hometown Glory

“Right now, we are more than equipped to be Asia’s arts capital,” says Marc Wong, Managing Editor of ART REPUBLIK. “Today, there is no other country in Asia that possesses economic and social stability, advanced infrastructure, ideal geographical location, generous government support for the arts, and ironically, space, all things considered – all things necessary to become Asia’s arts capital.”

It has been a year since the launch of Art Republik, Singapore’s premier quarterly art magazine. Over the past year, the magazine has provided exclusive insight into the art world- featuring emerging artists and reporting on exquisite international art events. For their 5th edition, which also marks their first anniversary, Art Republik celebrates Singapore as the art capital of Asia, featuring home-grown talents and local art events.

Its newly released 280-page blockbuster of an issue includes an exploration of the importance of Southeast Asian art; exclusive opinion pieces on Singapore as Asia’s arts capital from notable individuals including Lorenzo Rudolf, Founder and Fair Director of Art Stage Singapore, and Honor Harger, Executive Director of ArtScience Museum, Singapore; and a massive feature on Singapore’s best and brightest, the artists who represent her movers and shakers, what Singapore art is today, and who are flying the Singapore flag high, be it locally or on a global scale.

“My hope is that this issue carries with it a sense of patriotism and pride, and brings about joy and envy alike,” Marc Wong adds. “We at Art Republik very much want for Singaporeans to feel like this is their issue, which is why we invited a whole class of Singaporean artists to collaborate with us.”

Another exciting addition to ART REPUBLIK is the adoption of an artist collaboration concept for its front covers from this issue (five) onwards. The cover of this one-year anniversary issue, depicting a lion balancing on a red ball, was designed by one of Singapore’s more prominent artists and a local favourite, Robert Zhao Renhui. Zhao created this brand new art work exclusively for this ART REPUBLIK issue. “This is a huge step forward for ART REPUBLIK,” Marc Wong enthuses. “With this, we hope to encourage creativity, constantly deliver something fresh to our readers with every issue, and further involve the arts community to be part of what we’re trying to do here at ART REPUBLIK.”

Mr. Olivier Burlot, CEO & Publisher at Heart Media, comments: “This Anniversary issue is a milestone for ART REPUBLIK. Filling in a gap on the art publishing scene, ART REPUBLIK has been a major success from its debut issue. With an increasing number of art collectors, art events and galleries, the Asian art scene is vibrant, diverse and happening. Headquartered in Singapore, ART REPUBLIK is the new voice for the arts across Asia as well as the supporting bridge to promote art galleries from Europe, the US and Australia to an audience of Asian-based art lovers and art buyers”.
