Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Manchester United, crashed his Ferrari on his way to work on Thursday morning.

The incident happened at 10.20am close to his luxury home in Cheshire as he was driving his $380,000 Ferrari 599 GTB through a tunnel, under Manchester Airport.

Impact was so great that the front of the supercar was completely demolished, the windscreen shattered, the left wing mirror torn off and the rear tyre completely flat. The impact caused the car to lose a front wheel and it then ricocheted off the wall before coming to a stop.

A police source said: ‘It appears the driver lost control of it before hitting the side of the tunnel.

He was very lucky not to collide with other vehicles on the road in the crash and is even luckier to have escaped unharmed.

‘It was a nasty crash and he could easily have suffered quite serious injuries – the damage to the car tells you that much.’

A source told a Portuguese newspaper: ‘He said the crash was caused by moisture and oil on the road.’

After a breath test (negative) he was on his way to work again, injury-free albeit a bit shaken up. He reportedly took part in practice later in the day.

The Portuguese international, who was recently named World Player of the Year for his astonishing performances last season which helped United win the Premier League and the Champions League, has spent around £ 2million ($ 4 million) on cars since arriving in England five years ago.
