Jaguar has released the first image of a new concept car due to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

The C-X16 is described as a “production concept” and is likely to hint strongly at the future style of Jaguar vehicles when it is formally unveiled on September 13 at the huge motor show.

It has been designed by the same team that produced the Jaguar XJ, XF and XK, which is headed by the brand’s design chief Ian Callum, and is expected to be smaller than previous models in an attempt to compete with rivals such as Porsche.

The compact luxury model is expected to feature V6 petrol engines and a six-speed gearbox and could launch in 2013, with additional versions such as a coupe launching a few years later.

Jaguar, for its part, says that the model will show it retains “the ability to surprise, to excite and invigorate.”

It is one of a host of models expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which opens September 15 in Frankfurt, Germany.
