Chevrolet has announced an update to its iconic Camaro pony car set to be unveiled next month.

The Camaro ZL will be the most powerful Chevrolet convertible ever, with a supercharged 6.2-liter engine rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW).

The output will outshine models including the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, the Mercedes SL63 AMG, the Porsche 911 Turbo S and the Ford Shelby GT500.

New enhancements will also see the installation of several new braces to strengthen the convertible’s body, as well as additions designed to improve noise and vibration.

Performance Traction Management will come as standard in the model to control individual circuits such as magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control.

The model will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month and go on sale in late 2012, Chevrolet said — although it may not hog the spotlight for too long.

According to Automotive News, a new version of the Camaro’s nemesis — the Ford Mustang — could be in the works, boasting a 5.8-liter V-8 engine aimed at taking some of the shine off Chevrolet’s new record-setter.
