Gucci new made-to-measure collection

Lapo Elkann

Gucci has teamed up with Fiat heir and Italian business man Elpo Elkann for a capsule collection. This range will be officially unveiled during the next shows in Milan in September.

The “enfant terrible” of the Agnelli clan, as he is often dubbed, is not a newcomer to fashion. Indeed, Lapo Elkann founded the Italia Independanta luxury brand of clothes and accessories. He has also frequently featured in American magazine Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed List on several occasions.

For this collaboration, Lapo Elkann has come up with 27 silhouettes with Gucci’s creative director, Frida Giannini. The capsule collection will also include shoes and accessories.

1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

10 classic cars sell for $13.7 million auction total

1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

Old records tumbled and new records were set at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance auction as five classic cars each sold for in excess of $1 million at the annual classic car and motorcycle event.

1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Convertible Coupe

1. 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Convertible Coupe: $4,510,000

One of only three ever built and the only example to feature a supercharged, 320 bhp, 420 cubic inch engine, many experts also share the belief that this is one of the most beautiful bodies ever to grace a Duesenberg chassis. This car was capable of hitting 140mph when it rolled out of the factory.

1933 Stutz DV32 Convertible Victoria

2. 1933 Stutz DV32 Convertible Victoria: $1,512,500

Only about 200 examples of the DV32 were built as Stutz succumbed to the effects of the Great Depression but its final cars are a lasting reminder of the company’s heyday and the DV32 in particular is the Stutz collector’s dream car.

1965 Ferrari 275 GTB

3. 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB: $1,375,000

One of Ferrari’s most esteemed 1960s GT models, the 275 GTB was launched to replace the awe-inspiring 250GT and featured a legenadry Scaglietti-designed and built body. Only 250 ‘short nose’ examples were built, making it even more desirable.

1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Berlinetta Tuboscocca

4. 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Berlinetta ‘Tuboscocca’: $1,237,500

One of only six competition berlinettas ever produced and one with a true racing pedigree, this car offered 210bhp from a glorious 2.7-litre V12 engine back in the early 1950s. Most Ferraris of this era were coach-built by different local Italian deisgn houses, meaning that no two are completely alike and this one, styled by Carrozzeria Vignale, is no exception.

1911 Lozier Model 51 Seven Passenger Touring

5. 1911 Lozier Model 51 Seven-Passenger Touring: $1,100,000

Lozier was never a volume manufacturer and during the company’s 13-year life it built fewer than 600 cars a year. The Model 51 Touring was also one of the most expensive cars on sale in the US, costing $5,955 in 1911. But the cars boasted both luxury and performance, and Lozier competed successfully in a number of 24-hour endurance events and even raced at the inaugural Indy 500 – finishing second.

1930 Cord L-29 Sport Cabriolet

6. 1930 Cord L-29 Sport Cabriolet: $990,000

This is a one-off example was built for the 1931 Berlin Motor Show to show Europeans that American car builders were just as innovative and stylish. The German-built body and interior fittings — which included mahogany fittings and leather bucket seats – wowed enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic.

1966 Shelby 427 Cobra

7. 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra: $836,000

A true 1960s American icon, the Cobra is a hybrid in the original sense of the word, in that it features a European body with an American muscle car engine – in this case a 520bhp 427 cubic inch V8, making it one of the fastest cars in the world at the time.

1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourer

8. 1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourer: $825,000

Designed to look equally beautiful with the roof up or down, this was legendary car designer Gordon Buehrig’s favorite Duesenberg. Like all Duesenbergs it combined incredible engineering know-how with an exterior styling elegance, but like all cars built by the company, it was just too well-engineered and expensive to survive at a time when the country was going through a depression.

1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

9. 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster: $792,000

When it was launched in 1957, this roadster was one of the fastest cars on the road, capable of 155 mph. It remained in production until 1963 and in total, 1858 were produced. This particular example set a new record for a 300SL Roadster at auction.

1930 Stutz SV16 Monte Carlo

10. 1930 Stutz SV16 Monte Carlo: $550,000

One of only three ever built on an SV16 chassis, the Monte Carlo got its name because it aped the car design and technology of Europe’s leading car builders and as such features a padded fabric, rather than a beaten metal panel body.

China Spring Airlines

Chinese airline to start selling cars in the sky

China Spring Airlines

China’s Spring Airlines Co., the nation’s biggest privately-owned carrier, is planning to start selling cars onboard its aircraft, Bloomberg reports.

To complement the other items already on sale, the discount airline is in talks with several automakers about offering their cars at prices starting at $16,000. Flight attendants will be trained to provide information on the vehicles, and special discounts for fliers may apply.

“Car sales are very popular in Shanghai and our passengers can have time during their flight to study details of the models available,” a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.

It is not clear how the car would be delivered to the buyer. It is also not clear what brands and makes will be available and if flight attendants will get commission on the cars that they sell.

Analysts said the decision to launch in-flight car sales may not result in profits for the airline but will more likely serve as an in-flight advertisement for carmakers.

Rolls-Royce says “never say never” to a possible SUV

rolls royce range

Rolls-Royce’s Asia-Pacific regional director says the company has a “never say never” attitude to developing an SUV, despite the implications it could have for Rolls-Royce’s brand perception.

Despite the fact that Bentley was laughed off the stage when it unveiled its SUV concept, the EXP 9F, at the 2012 Geneva Motorshow, or that Land Rover appears to perfectly nail the concept of the quintessential luxury SUV with each new Range Rover, Rolls-Royce has revealed that although it has no immediate plans, it is not prepared to completely rule out entering the 4×4 market in the future.

In an interview with CarAdvice, Rolls-Royce Asia-Pacific regional director Paul Harris said: “The Rolls-Royce philosophy is very clear, and that is that we will never say never to anything.”

“As it stands at the moment it’s not in discussion. We’ve just brought Wraith to market, that’s probably our model offering in the new market for at least the next two and a half years. There’s nothing on the drawing board at all as it stands now, but the never say never scenario still stands.”

There is a story, which is quite possibly apocryphal, about Rolls-Royce’s engineering and design departments in the 1950s and 1960s banning the use of the words ‘speed’ and ‘fast’ from discussions about its cars and their future direction.

The company was dedicated to building the best car money could buy and seldom in the history of the motorcar, if ever, has the world’s fastest car also been the world’s best car.

This story is important because while BMW pledged to maintain the company’s brand values when it bought an almost exhausted Rolls-Royce 10 years ago, there have been signs that now, the company is indeed considering spreading its wings and moving into other motoring subcategories.

The most obvious example of this brand extension is the aforementioned Wraith. Launched this month at the Geneva Motorshow, it is undeniably striking in appearance, but it is also undeniably a sportscar, focused just as much on handling and driver experience as it is on propelling four people in splendid isolation on a cushion of air to their next country club meeting or tour around the continent.

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Hermès Unveil Atmos Clock

Atmos Hermes Clock

Hermès and Jaeger-LeCoultre have created an Atmos clock with a hand-blown and carved enamel and crystal casing produced by Cristalleries the Saint-Louis, a subsidiary of Hermès.

First introduced in 1928 as a perpetuum mobile, the Atmos differentiates itself from every other mechanical timepiece in that it literally never needs to be wound.

It functions thanks to a mechanism that contracts and expands with the ambient temperature, so that a variation of 1 degree Centigrade is enough to keep it going for 48 hours.

Produced in a limited edition of 176, corresponding to the number of years since Hermès was founded, the Atmos Hermès clock will retail for 30,000 euros ($39,100).

Dita Von Teese 3D printed dress

Dita Von Teese debuted a 3D-printed dress at the Ace Hotel in New York earlier this week, born out of a collaboration between designer Michael Schmidt and architect Francis Bitonti.

Printed off at 3Dprinting marketplace Shapeways, the floor-length nylon gown was made using selective laser sintering (SLS), where material is built up in layers from plastic powder fused together with a laser.

The rigid plastic components are fully articulated to create a netted structure that allows for movement. Spirals based on the Golden Ratio were applied to a computer rendering of Von Teese’s body so the garment fits her exactly.

Draped over a nude silk corset, the black-lacquered dress is cinched in at the waist and exaggerated at the shoulders, and embellished with 12,000 Swarovski crystals. Source: Dezeen.

MSC Preziosa photo

Europe’s largest cruise ship makes first voyage

MSC Preziosa line cruiser

Europe’s largest cruise ship the MSC Preziosa — a behemoth longer than the Eiffel Tower — cast off on its first voyage Thursday, from Saint-Nazaire in western France to the southern port of Marseille.

The Preziosa was initially ordered by Libyan state shipping firm GNMTC in 2010, before shipbuilder STX France sold it on to Swiss-Italian operator MSC Cruises a year ago after Libya stopped making payments amid the revolution against slain leader Moamer Kadhafi.

It measures 333 metres (1,093 feet) long, can hold 4,300 passengers and 1,400 crew, has four swimming pools, and is decked out in black and purple velvet, white-veined black marble and giant mirrors in front of passengers’ beds.

At a christening ceremony Thursday, French Industrial Renewal Minister Arnaud Montebourg said the Preziosa was a symbol of French shipbuilding prowess.

The Preziosa measures among the 10 largest ships in the world. But MSC loses out in the size battle to Miami-based Royal Caribbean International, which has five ships larger than the Preziosa.

5-CINCO

Restaurants spanning Doha, Paris, Berlin and Vietnam have made Architectural Digest’s top 10 list of the most beautifully designed new eateries in the world.

TROLL WALL ROMSDAL

Chosen for “going beyond the ordinary,” the magazine shines the spotlight on recently opened dining destinations such as The Troll Wall in Romsdal, Norway, which does an architecturally admirable job of competing against its stunning backdrop, a location set against the highest vertical rock face in Europe.

TROLL WALL

At the foot of the towering slate grey Norwegian mountain, a pyramid-like structure of dramatically angled glass walls rises out of the ground – angled so as not to impede any sight lines to the sky.

ASTOR GRILL

Other restaurants that got an AD nod include the Astor Grill at St.Regis Doha, a steak and seafood restaurant where guests are greeted with a striking 5-meter tall, curved, silver sculptural art piece that wraps around the entrance wall.

ASTOR GRILL RESTAURANT

Philippe Starck-designed restaurant Ma Cocotte, located in the biggest and most famous flea market at the edge of Paris the Marché aux Puces Saint-Ouen, was also singled out for its eclectic interior, furnished with vintage and modern finds from the surrounding minefield of antiques.

Olivia Putman redesigns Nina Ricci’s L’Air du Temps

Nina Ricci Air du Temps

Nina Ricci‘s L’Air du Temps fragrance was launched in 1948 and its bottle design has since been reworked by major artists. After Joan Rebull, Andy Warhol and David Hamilton, it is now designer, interior architect and landscape artist Olivia Putman’s turn to give her take on the bottle.

This new version of the bottle remains quite faithful to the original, with the subtle touches that come with the Putman style (Olivia is Andrée Putman’s daughter). Blue is added to the extremely feminine original bottle and its curves rise up to meet the famous glass birds on top of the bottle.

The essence is still the same: 30 components including jasmine, rose, gardenia, bergamot, violet, iris, sandalwood and musk. This Olivia Putman collector’s edition of L’Air du Temps will be on sale from May 2 at 85 euros for a 100 ml spray.

Bellagio caviar Buffet

Las Vegas hotel offers all-you-can-eat caviar buffet

Bellagio caviar Buffet

According to the Las Vegas Sun, after piloting the caviar bar for a few weeks, Las Vegas hotel the Bellagio has decided to make the buffet a permanent fixture following a wildly popular run.

The station features a range of caviar, including black American sturgeon caviar, red flying fish tobiko caviar or salmon roe, for $38 (€29).

Unlike regular dinner buffets, meanwhile, diners aren’t free to shovel indecent mountains of fish eggs onto their plates like they are chicken wings or overcooked pasta.

Instead, a ‘chef attendant’ is on hand to serve the caviar atop house-made blinis, buckwheat waffles, freshly rolled sushi and Ahi tuna cones. Garnishes include chopped egg, onions and crème fraîche.

The caviar buffet is available Friday and Saturday from 3:30 pm to 10 pm.

Christie’s to auction ‘perfect’ new 102-carat diamond

102 carat diamond

Auction house Christie’s on Wednesday said it would put up for auction “one of the world’s most perfect diamonds” — a new colourless, pear-shaped gem weighing 101.73 carats.

In the rough, the diamond was 236 carats when it was extracted from the Jwaneng mine in Botswana, before it was meticulously sculpted for 21 months, Christie’s said.

The diamond “has literally been sculpted like a work of art,” Rahul Kadakia, who heads Christie’s jewellery division in Switzerland and the Americas, said in a statement, describing the gem as “one of the most beautiful ‘white’ diamonds Christie’s has ever had the honour of offering for sale.”

The May 15 auction in Geneva will mark the first time the rock goes on sale, and the buyer will have the privilege of naming it. Before going on sale, the diamond will go on tour to New York and Hong Kong.

The American Institute of Gemology has handed the gemstone the top colourless grade “D” and the best clarity grade, “flawless,” Christie’s said, also hailing the diamond’s “absolute symmetry”.

In this category, the reigning world champion is the Cullinan Diamond, a gem weighing 530.2 carats that is part of the British crown jewels.

Kate Moss collaborates with French sushi chain

Raw like New York box

After calling on Lenny Kravitz last year, the French-based sushi chain Sushi Shop has given British supermodel carte blanche to design its new gourmet box.

This box will be made up of new menu items, which will be revealed on March 19. The design created by Kate Moss will be unveiled during a private launch party.

The box for 2 people will contain 40 original creations and will retail for €45 to eat in and €42.50 to take away. The special set will be available in Sushi Shop outlets or through ordering online.

Last year, to celebrate its first outlet in the United States and more precisely, New York, Sushi Shop asked Lenny Kravitz to design a limited edition box.

Kravitz created a box named Raw like New York that featured graffiti as a reminder of New York street art. It contained 32 pieces of sushi, sushi rolls and other Japanese-inspired offerings.

In addition to its network of stores in France and its New York store, Sushi Shop counts locations in Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Milan and Geneva, with plans to open in the UK, Germany and UAE.

Hermès Rallye 24 tableware

Hermes Rallye 24 tableware

French fashion brand Hermès introduced its Rallye 24 collection of tableware last month in a Paris garage stocked with vintage sports cars.

Inspired by the world of motor racing, the new tableware re-imagines the classic chain d’ancre design as a race car track. The 49-piece collection of jewel-colored porcelain has a pattern of ellipses reminiscent of speedways.

The rich colors evoke old international racing liveries, like Italian red, French blue, German silver and British green. Rallye 24 reflects the sporting life, Hermès’s theme for 2013.

The dishes will be available in the United States by the end of March. Prices range from $130 for a tumbler to $640 for an oval platter. The set of six round plates shown here is $1,140.

The most photographed monument on Tripadvisor?

Eiffel Tower

On the largest travel review site in the world, there is one monument that has emerged as the most photographed and shared among users. The monument in question: none other than the Eiffel Tower.

Around 5,200 photos of The Iron Lady have been shared on TripAdvisor over the last 13 years, more than any other landmark in the world including the Colosseum in Rome, which nabbed second spot.

To pay homage to the iconic French tower, TripAdvisor has created a mosaic using 500 of the photos submitted.

It’s not the first time the Eiffel Tower has been named as the most photographed landmark in the world. In 2009, researchers from Cornell University mined the nearly 35 million images posted by 300,000 users of photo-sharing site Flickr, and came up with the same result.

A few years later in 2011, the listing changed, with the Empire State Building in New York knocking the Eiffel Tower into fourth spot.

According to a study, the 324-meter structure is also worth 435 billion euros, a sum deduced after factoring in everything from the monument’s image, branding, esthetic quality, and monetary value.

Dior to take over Harrods

dior at harrods

From March 16 to April 14 the celebrated Knightsbridge store Harrods, will be tranformed as part of a month-long feast of Christian Dior mixing “French Savior Fair and British charm”.

The store windows will be transformed into classic Dior grey and white. Traditional bright-red post boxes and telephone cabins take center stage, and Dior’s creative director, Raf Simons has also designed costumes for the shop’s Beefeaters.

‘The Stars in Dior’ exhibition will show off the real dresses worn by Hollywood starlets including Emma Watson, and Oscar winning actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard.

The fourth floor at Harrods will host the “ultimate Dior experience”, which opens a reconstruction of the facade of the Dior flagship at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Visitors are then able to explore displays and exhibits featuring some of the brand’s most famous handbags, accessories and fragrances.

“Like the house of Dior, Harrods is reputed for astounding and satisfying its elegant women all over the world,” Sidney Toledano, Christian Dior’s President and CEO, told Vogue UK. “The inspired collaboration with Harrods not only draws attention to Monsieur Dior’s relationship with the fabled department store but also affirms the house of Dior’s continued high standards via creation and discernment,” he added.

KENZO Vans 2013

Leopard theme for new Kenzo / Vans collaboration

vans kenzo spring 2013

The theme of the fourth capsule collection by skate shoe brand Vans and luxury brand Kenzo is the Asian-inspired “Clouded Leopard.” The motif also features heavily in Kenzo’s spring 2013 collection.

Following a trip to Thailand, Kenzo’s creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon were inspired by leopard print. This explains why it appears in many pieces in the brand’s new collection.

The new range of Vans designed in partnership with Kenzo also takes leopard print as its key theme. The Vans Authentic and Slip-On Vans are covered in Clouded Leopard in a variety of colors (ochre, orange, blue, green and khaki).

This exclusive collection is available in Kenzo boutiques and on the e-shop as well as in Opening Ceremony, Colette, and Lane Crawford. Prices start at €90.

Qantas offers passengers their own iPad

Qantas ipad

Passengers flying Australian carrier Qantas will now be provided with individual iPads which can stream more than 200 hours of movies, TV shows and music.

The new service, which supplies an iPad for use during the flight, is being offered in all classes on flights between Sydney and Honolulu on the airline’s Boeing 767 aircraft, which have also been refitted with leather seat covers in business class, new carpeting, lighting, curtains and cabin dividers.

Entertainment programs are streamed directly to the iPads using the aircraft’s inflight entertainment technology, Q Streaming, which taps into the plane’s onboard WiFi.

Over the next few months, new interactive games, travel and business-related apps, as well as digital newspapers and magazines will be added, says Qantas.

While Qantas offers iPads, American Airlines hands out Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets to passengers traveling on select routes such as New York’s JFK airport and Los Angeles, and international flights to Europe and South America on flights served with 767-300 aircraft.

Meanwhile, last year PC World magazine named Delta the most technology-friendly airline in the US for offering charging stations and iPad installations, onboard WiFi, and its Fly Delta app which allows passengers to track their checked baggage by scanning the bag tag with their smartphone.
