Luxury market rebounding

The luxury goods market is rebounding from the slump caused by the global recession, but analysts say upscale sellers will be facing a hard slog due to changing demographics and lingering consumer caution.

Global luxury goods industry sales are expected to grow four percent in 2010 to 158 billion euros (195 billion dollars) after a painful 8.0 percent decline in 2009, according to the consulting firm Bain & Company.

Louis Vuitton unveils London flagship

Luxury fashion and accessories retailer Louis Vuitton opened its new London flagship this week.

The 1,500 sq ft store occupies a corner site at the junction of New Bond Street and Clifford Street.

Set over three levels, the store incorporates Louis Vuitton heritage touches such as trunks and leather, as well as modern features including a LED staircase.

The new London LV maison has been designed by the New York-based architect, Peter Marino, who also worked on the brand’s Champs Elysées maison.

“Biggest house in America” up for sale

Although not yet finished, the “largest family home in America” is now for sale in southwest Orange County, with an asking price of $75 million.

The 30-bedroom mansion – modelled after France’s Palace of Versailles – is the latest victim of the economic downturn in America.

The house boasts its own bowling alley, roller skating rink and Olympic-sized swimming pool, and is the largest family home ever built in the U.S.

Sarah Burton: New Creative Director at McQueen

A long-time collaborator of the late British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton, has been appointed creative director of his label.

Burton has worked with McQueen since 1996 and was appointed head of design for the label’s women’s wear in 2000.

“The creation of modern, beautifully crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee’s vision. I intend to stay true to his legacy,” she said.

British gin makers Tanqueray introduce a new limited edition version of its No. Ten Gin, dressed up by popular fashion designer Jeremy Scott.

Jeremy has kept the bottle classic and added limited edition packaging and top creating a very elegant, Art Nouveau looking end product for the luxury gin.

The sleek angled top and packaging highlights the angled design of the bottle and the interior print is a repeat of olives and cocktail glasses.

Vienna the world’s best city to live

Vienna is the best city in the world to live, a survey said Wednesday, putting Europe at the top of the rankings with Asia and Africa trailing.

The Austrian capital “retains the top spot as the city with the world’s best quality of living,” British consultancy firm Mercer said in its 2010 Quality of Living Survey.

Swiss cities Zurich and Geneva followed in second and third places respectively, while Vancouver in Canada and Auckland in New Zealand were joint fourth.

Jean-Paul Gaultier Is Leaving Hermes

Jean-Paul Gaultier, the enfant terrible of French fashion, is stepping down as designer of women’s ready-to-wear for Hermès.

He will be replaced by Christophe Lemaire, who has revitalised Lacoste since and has also worked under Christian Lacroix and Thierry Mugler.

The spring-summer 2011 collection, to be presented in October, will be the last designed by Gaultier for Hermès.

Louis Vuitton Handbag Advertisements Banned

A pair of Louis Vuitton advertisements, by Ogilvy & Mather, has been pulled in the UK after advertising watchdogs found they misled customers.

The controversial ad showed a photo of a seamstress stitching the handle of a handbag, with the text reading: ‘The seamstress with linen thread and beeswax.

‘A needle, linen thread, beeswax and infinite patience protect each over-stitch from humidity and the passage of time.

‘One could say that a Louis Vuitton bag is a collection of details. But with so much attention lavished on every one, should we only call them details?’

Lady GaGa Buys Her Parents A Rolls-Royce

Lady Gaga brought her dad to tears after presenting him with a luxury car on her parents’ wedding anniversary.

“I bought my parents a car,” said the performer during a chat with Britain’s The Times. “It’s a Rolls-Royce. It’s black.”

Her parents thought she’d rented it for them to drive for the day and her dad was overcome with emotion after realizing she’d purchased it for them to keep.

Mercedes Benz on I-Phone and iPad

Mercedes-Benz has constructed an all-new “iPad Lounge” in their state-of-the-art museum that is based in Stuttgart, Germany.

It shows you technical information about scores of historical Mercedes models which went on display for the special “Super Sports Car Exhibition” exhibits.

Visitors have been able to test out the tablet device using this app since the end of April, enabling them to experience the exhibition interactively.

Lufthansa unveils new first class

Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, has lately received its first Airbus A380 jetliner, and they claim its cabin to be the “world’s quietest first class.”

The First-Class bathroom features wide vertical mirrors and a five-star hotel-style vanity area. The bathroom is fitted with separate wash, changing and toilet areas.

“There’s a leather banquette seat in the changing area, for heaven’s sake,” travel website, Jaunted, said in a review.

Moscow Vending Machines Sell Caviar

A Russian company has installed 33 vending machines across Moscow, including in the mayor’s office, that dispense glass jars and tin cans of red salmon roe.

This is a less-pricey version of the caviar, that Russians spread on toast and drink with sparkling wine for special events.

But those looking for the black sturgeon varieties — such as Beluga, Ossetra, and Sevruga — won’t find it in vending machines.

Black sturgeon caviar harvesting is limited to about 9 tons a year as many varieties have been hunted to near-extinction.

Matisse, Picasso and other works stolen in Paris

Five works including paintings by modern masters Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso have been stolen from a Paris museum.

The canvases – worth a total of 100 million euros ($123m) – were discovered missing from the city-run Musee d’Art Moderne when it opened its doors.

Museum officials found a broken window and a sheared-off padlock, suggesting the heist took place overnight Wednesday.

Besides the Matisse and the Picasso, works by Georges Braque, Ferdinand Leger and Amedeo Modigliani were also stolen, the officials said.
