Tintin Comic Art Sells for $1.2 mn

CAPTAIN Haddock would have choked on his whisky: original artwork for a Tintin comic book fetched a record US$1.2 million at a Paris auction on March 29th.
The 1932 oil painting, executed for the iconic cover of Tintin in America smashed the previous world record for an original comic book work.

That was set in March 2007 when a drawing by artist Enki Bilal called Bleu Sang (Blue Blood) fetched €177,000.

Judged a "museum piece" in Artcurial's auction catalogue, the painting by Tintin's Belgian creator Herge finally sold for €764,200, including expenses.

Total earnings for today's one-off sale of 650 comic originals - each of which had a starting price of €280,000 - came to roughly €3.4 million, the gallery and auction house said.

The $22,000 Burberry Alligator Warrior

Exceptionally high price point. It's made of alligator skin with metal stud detailing, drawstring closure, and a metal toggle engraved with the Burberry logo. The Alligator Warrior has lots of handy features (i.e. plenty of compartments and zip pockets) but nothing that stands out as outrageously unique to this bag alone.

Bespoke Chocolates

Imagine being given free creative rein in England's most exclusive chocolate factory, one that uses the latest equipment and specializes only in top-end ingredients. It's a fantasy come true for any chocolate connoisseur — and the man who can make it happen is Bill McCarrick, master chocolatier at Sir Hans Sloane Chocolate House in Surrey. The newest player in the increasingly competitive world of élite chocolatiers, McCarrick wants to take cocoa appreciation to a higher level by letting clients create bespoke handmade chocolates. "Conventional definitions of luxury chocolates are passé," he says. "This is a different echelon of luxury to do with rarity, and I'm offering a creative personal experience."

First, McCarrick asks about your taste preferences, especially for fruits and wine. Once you've decided what flavor to imbue your filling with, the tasting starts, with McCarrick helping to pick from a range of couvertures (the mixture from which the chocolates are made) to find the best match for your chosen center. It's terroir rather than cocoa content that counts; you may want Panamanian chocolate redolent of tobacco, a more floral Madagascan, or a Venezuelan infused with red berry and raisin. Production starts only after more fine-tunings to ensure your chocolate is just right — whether it was conceived to complement a certain wine, to encapsulate a spice remembered from a special holiday or simply to attain the ultimate in chocolate indulgence.

The $2,400 tailor-made package includes tasting consultations, a handmade rosewood-and-maple inlaid box containing 60 customized chocolates, and a backup box of another 60. As all good chocoholics know, it wouldn't do to run out. www. sirhanssloane.com

Pontiac goes retro with the 2009 Pontiac Solstice coupe, unveiled at the recently concluded New York Auto Show.

The removable roof is made of magnesium and weighs just 14.2 kg (or 31 lbs). Like its convertible sibling, the Solstice coupe is powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine delivering 173hp, while the GXP version gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged Ecotec with 260hp.

The interiors also get the same treatment as the convertible, except for minor tweaks in design made to the area behind the seats for easy access to the cargo area.

Still a prototype, it was designed by Joris Van Gelder. Inspired by the idea of making a remote control exclusively for kitchen use, he wanted to come up with something you didn’t need to touch. Cause remote controls are considered to be one of the gadgets that house maximum bacteria.

Geneva ‘08: Piaget’s Altiplano 40mm

Bigger and bolder are the watchwords of the watch industry these days, along with the very real drive to control more and more of the production process. For Piaget, this is not the whole story , as the brand is trying to have its cake and eat it too.

Over the years, the brand’s expertise in ultra-thin mechanical watches and its investments in its own in-house know-how have been well-documented. The new Altiplano watch embodies all these things, with a manufacture movement – caliber 838P – measuring a mere 2.5mm thick married to case in very contemporary dimensions (40mm).

As is the norm with this collection, the watch is elegant and understated, with only the small seconds sub-dial at 10 o’clock and the case diameter breaking the mould. It is available in both white gold and pink gold, with a limited edition in platinum.

Eiffel Tower Gets A Makeover - April fool ?

Due to ever increasing crowds, SERERO architects have submitted a proposal to extend the third floor of the world famous tower.

Since its creation the amount of visitors coming to reach the top of the tower has increased to reach its limit capacity, 6.5 million. The floor area of each level decreases with the height because of the tower geometry resulting in very long waiting lines and crowd management problems. In celebration of the 120th birthday of the tower, the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel decided to restructure the public reception and access areas of the tower.

The proposal of SERERO Architects aims to create a temporary horizontal extension of the third floor of the tower in order to increase the quality of the access of the public as well as experiencing the fantastic 360 degrees sight of Paris. When Gustave Eiffel designed the tower, he imagined that the tower would become the support of a great variety of scientific devices and experimentations to study gravity and wind pressure. The structure of the tower was therefore designed for increase of its weight.

Structural simulation of the Eiffel tower indicates that it is a highly hyperstatic structure, which is dimensioned for a weight higher than what it is supporting today. The structure will extend the top floor plate of the tower by grafting a high performance carbon Kevlar structure on it. The design is based on a generative script, creating branches out of the primary structure of the tower.

In opposition with modern engineering (based on the concept of repetition and optimization), the project for the Eiffel tower extension is based on an alternative model of high performance. The structure will be temporarily bolted to the slab without requiring any modification of the existing structure. It will expand the usable floor area from 280 m2 to 580m2.

Ming-Dynasty Gold Vessel May Fetch HK$60 Million in Hong Kong

Melted down, a gold Ming Dynasty bowl would sell for about $30,000, twice as much as four years ago. At a Hong Kong auction next month, the imperial vessel may fetch more than HK$60 million ($7.7 million), Sotheby's said.

Inscribed with dragons and set with pearls, turquoise, rubies and sapphires, the three-legged vessel -- made with 1.3 kilograms of 18K gold -- is the highlight of Sotheby's auction of more than 25 gold and precious-metal objects in Hong Kong on April 11, the New York-based auction house said. The lots may raise a combined HK$100 million, said Sotheby's.[...]

``Timing couldn't be better,'' said Tian Kai, a Beijing- based art dealer. ``Gold is all the rage right now.''

Sotheby's Hong Kong was offered the consignment in mid- January, days before the cut-off date for assembling lots for the auction, said Nicolas Chow, the auction house's head of Chinese ceramics and artworks. He declined to identify the seller. Several European and Asian private collectors have inquired about the consignment.

"Gold is the most comprehensive marker of luxury in ancient cultures, including the Ming Dynasty,'' said Chow. "If fine porcelain from these eras could fetch record prices, there is no reason art made with costlier material couldn't fare better.''

The record for a Qing ceramic was set in November 2006 when Hong Kong businesswoman Alice Cheng paid HK$151.3 million for a porcelain bowl at a Christie's International auction. Several private collectors, including casino magnate Stanley Ho, have bought imperial artifacts at auction and donated them to China in the past few years. [...]

Lamborghini ceases production of Gallardo Superleggera

The king is dead; long live the king. With barely a whimper, the short-lived and short-geared Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera has slipped quietly into the night. Its truncated production run yielded just 172 examples – 10 in white, 34 in gray, 37 in black, 45 in yellow and 46 in orange (each of whose owners thought they were being original) – ensuring that the Superleggera will become a collector's item years from now. The departure of the Superleggera comes hot on the heels of the introduction of the new LP560-4 and makes room for a new stripped out Gallardo.

The most expensive TV ad ever made...

For £10 million ($20 million), this is the most expensive advert and not because of some highest paid model flashing a million dollar smile or hour glass figure. In fact the ad features hundreds of villagers who have no clue about acting or film making. However latest in the series of 'Good Things Come to Those Who Wait' ads, 'Tipping Point' got honored for being the most expensive and complex Guinness advert to be produced. The ad sees hundreds of villagers come together to create the ultimate domino effect, featuring 6,000 iconic black and white dominoes, alongside thousands of unexpected toppling objects, include suitcases, oil drums, fridges and cars.

Directed by Nicolai Fuglsig of Sony Bravia 'Balls' fame, he said that shooting the new Guinness advert was the biggest challenge of his career yet. You have to see it thru to believe that the toppling items included 6,000 dominoes, 10,000 books, 400 tyres, 75 mirrors, 50 fridges, 45 wardrobes and 6 cars!

$35 Movie Tickets - Cinemas of the Future

The question is: would you pay $35.00 a ticket for one movie?

Even if each complex will have theaters with digital projection to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, 40 reclining armchair seats, the ones with footrest, just like home? Except these seats have a service button to call a waiter. Why? Because patrons will be able to have made-to-order meals like sushi and other theater foods from on-site chefs. Oh Reeaaalllyy!! Of course, they’ll have to pay extra for that.

Would you pay $35.00 + even if they have lounges and bars serving cocktails and appetizers, concierge service and valet parking?

These people seem to think so. Village Roadshow Ltd., Act III, Lambert Entertainment and the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension fund will spend $200 million to build 50 theaters nationwide over the next five years to bring us mere mortals the luxury cinema circuit Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinemas. Are you ready to give in yet? I might if I don’t have to wear pearls and a little black dress!

The first two venues are set to open in South Barrington, Chicago, and the Seattle suburb of Redmond in October.

The Burbank-based company's hoping to attract 10 million "upscale and affluent" consumers per year to its theaters that will be housed in high-end shopping centers and malls. Each complex will typically house eight screens."It's a new way to go to the movies," said Graham Burke, managing director and CEO of Village Roadshow Ltd. "It's like what Mercedes is to a Toyota or like flying first class in an airplane." Company execs said bringing the chain to the U.S. is a "natural extension" of the brand. (variety)
